What About Projector Lamps After January 1, 2026?
November 11, 2025There has been some uncertainty and many questions about whether lamp-based projectors and replacement lamps would be banned from production and import within the EU due to the EU’s RoHS Directive (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) (2011/65/EU). The concern stems from the fact that these products contain mercury. Learn more about the EU RoHS Directive.
Here’s an update clarifying the facts on mercury lamp usage in the EU.

Projector Lamps Are Exempt from the EU Directive
The RoHS Directive regulates the use of hazardous substances such as lead and mercury in electronic products sold within the EU. Its goal is to protect the environment and human health. However, certain exemptions are granted when no suitable alternative materials or technologies are available. In such cases, manufacturers can apply for an exemption through the European Commission.
Projector lamps fall under one of these exemptions – specifically Exemption 4(f)-II: “High-brightness projector lamps (>2000 ANSI lumens)” – which allows continued production and sale of projector lamps.
This means you can keep using your lamp-based projector and replace the lamp when needed.

Exemption Valid Until February 2027
These exemptions are time-limited but renewable. If an exemption is not renewed, the EU Commission must still provide a transition period of 12 to 18 months.
Currently, this exemption is valid until February 24, 2027, and the industry plans to submit a renewal application in 2025 for an additional five-year period.
As a result, manufacturers such as Panasonic have no current plans to discontinue projector lamps and will continue production at least until February 2027 – and potentially beyond, if the exemption is extended.

Considering a Laser Projector?
If your projector lamp has reached the end of its life, you can still purchase a replacement lamp.
That said, it might be worth considering a mercury-free alternative such as a laser projector. Laser technology not only avoids the use of hazardous materials but also offers several advantages – including better energy efficiency, higher image quality, longer lifespan, and lower maintenance costs.
